Post Game “Chat-iquette”?

By bloggermark

(Don and Debby have graciously allowed me to stick around, so here’s my guest blogger post!)

I’ve always wondered whether etiquette has emerged from the thousands of matches played through this site every month. For example, what should a game loser should say, if anything, via chat once the game is ended? What should the winner say?

I think of it like the end of a tennis match. The loser usually approaches the net first and extends a hand; likewise, when I lose a game (which is often these days!), I try to post quickly (“Nice game, congrats!”, “Great closing. Well done!”). The winner always responds with a simple thank-you, and if he/she wants to analyze the game, we may converse while the channel is open. When I win, I reply with a simple note of appreciation for the game. There’s no need to go on about my brilliant play, or how his/her mistake drew a narrow loss, or any other comment that would just be annoying.

What do you think? Do you rate the experience with a player based on post-game chat? What chat expectations, if any, do you have when you win? Do you say anything when you lose?

I know there are no right or wrong answers here, so let’s just share opinions and keep it lighthearted. :-)

Chat Feature

By Debbyoc

As you all know the chat feature has not been working for the past  few days. Here is a link to Zynga that says they are aware of the problem and are working on it.

In the meantime, you can send “private messages” to your opponent by going to your “My Tourney” and clicking on the game you are playing.

Double assignment

By Don

For the most recent daily challenge, people received two separate emails because both the old and new scripts were running. This has caused considerable confusion. Please use the web site to verify your real opponent. Rest assured nobody will be disadvantaged because of this. I will address and attempt to rectify any problems that arise from this on a case by case basis.

By Don
Hi my name is Don and I hope to continue and extend the wonderful work that Mark has done building this website and the community.  The future of this website will be driven by its users because they have and always will be the heart and soul of wordswithfriends.net.

I will flesh out my plans for the site in greater detail in the coming weeks. I would like to assure everyone that wordswithfriends.net will remain free for its users.  As a sneak preview part of my plans involve the introduction of modest cash prizes for tournament winners as well as prize opportunities for the everyday player.

I look forward to and welcome your feedback.

Change of Site Owner/Operator

By bloggermark

It’s with mixed emotions that I announce that I have entered into an agreement to transfer this site to a new operator: Don Nguyen of Sydney, Australia. I have spent a great deal of time getting to know Don and hear his vision for the site, and I’m confident he’s got the skill, drive, and ingenuity to take WordsWithFriends.net to new heights.

More information to follow later, but I just wanted to let you all know now.

Congrats go out to the December Daily Challenge Champion, Evil, PHd, who bested runner up Mleher in a spirited best 2 of 3 challenge.

Both players showed determination and excellence by being the only players out of several hundred to secure a perfect 100% win ratio over 20 consecutive games in December.

This Site is For Sale

By bloggermark

Hello, All.

As you know I’ve been running the site for a year now, and I must say it’s been an enriching and rewarding experience. Getting to know so many of you has been the best part. But now I have found myself increasingly invested in Web development projects on my weekends and evenings. Since I work a full-time job and am raising a family, I really have no time to manage this site any longer. So, I have made the difficult decision to relinquish control of this site and put it up for sale.

There are numerous models by which a profit could be obtained from operating the site, from a small fee to play in tournaments to retailing of iPhone/iPad third-party products, to placement of blog ads. With nearly 7,000 subscribers and monthly unique visits exceeding 100,000, this is a highly marketable site.

My initial asking price is $1,000, and I will entertain multiple offers if they’re presented. However, price is not the only factor. The last thing I want is to see the site turned into a spammer URL or a link farm, so I have some strict requirements for the turnover.

  1. The primary purpose of the site must remain dedicated to WWF community and tournaments for a minimum of 1 year.
  2. I will require a criminal background check and references.
  3. All registered subscribers will be notified of the change in ownership via email and be given the opportunity to “opt-out” in advance of the transfer.

The sale transfer will include the site technology (databases, PHP code, Web pages, etc.), registered user info, and domain registrations for wordswithfriends.net and wordswithfriends.org. However, it should be noted that Zynga With Friends (the makers of the Words With Friends iPhone app) likely have a defensible claim to the domain name rights. While they have been tolerant of my use of these domain names in the past, it cannot be assumed they will do so indefinitely. In a worst case scenario, you might need to reestablish the site under a different domain name.

All told, I think this is a great opportunity for anyone looking to have some fun running the site and making some cash in the process. If you are interested in purchasing this site, please contact me (Mark Montoya) through the Contact Form.
